Canvas vs framed prints - which should you choose?

By the Storytiles team in Cape Town · Updated 2 November 2026

Short answer

Choose canvas for a big, painterly statement piece with no glare. Choose a framed print for the sharpest detail and a classic gallery look, which is best for portraits, art prints and certificates. Both need nails. If you're renting, or want a whole wall of family photos you can rearrange, peel-and-stick framed photo tiles are the third option.

Both put a photo on your wall, but they look and behave very differently. Here's how to choose.

What's the real difference?

Canvas is your photo printed on textured fabric and stretched over a wooden frame, so the image wraps around the edges. There's no glass, so no reflections, and the texture gives photos a soft, painterly feel.

A framed print is your photo printed on paper, usually with a white mat border, behind glass or acrylic in a moulding. It's the classic gallery look and keeps fine detail sharp.

Which looks better for your photos?

  • Faces, family photos and black-and-white portraits: framed. Fine detail stays crisp.
  • Landscapes, beach shots and artwork: canvas. The texture flatters them.
  • A room with big windows: canvas, or a matt frame, because glass reflects light.

What does each cost in South Africa?

Canvas is usually cheaper size for size: there's no glass, mat or moulding. In November 2026 a 30×30 cm canvas from Orms Print Room was R414, and budget printers run sales from well under that. Framing a print usually costs more than printing it, and more again with a custom mat.

For a whole wall, add the hardware, the measuring and the patching when you move out.

Which is easier to hang and move?

Neither is designed to move. Canvas is light but still needs a nail or hook per piece. Framed prints with glass are heavier and often need a wire and a solid fixing. Lining up six of either takes a tape measure, a spirit level and patience.

Is there a third option that's renter-friendly?

Yes. Peel-and-stick framed photo tiles give you the framed look (black, white or wood, with an optional white mat) without a single nail. They stick to smooth painted walls, peel off without marks, and can be rearranged in minutes. A six-tile wall from Storytiles is R2 299,99 with free delivery, made in Cape Town.

Which should you choose?

  • One big landscape or art piece, and you own the wall: canvas.
  • A treasured portrait, artwork or certificate: a framed print.
  • A wall of family photos, or you're renting: framed photo tiles.

Frequently asked questions

Is canvas cheaper than a framed print?

Usually, size for size, because there's no glass, mat or moulding. In November 2026 a 30×30 cm canvas from Orms Print Room was R414, and framing a print typically costs more than printing it.

Which looks better for family photos?

A framed print, or framed photo tiles, keep faces sharper. Canvas texture softens fine detail, which suits landscapes and painterly photos better than close-up portraits.

Does canvas fade or need glass?

Canvas has no glass, so there's no glare, but keep it out of direct sun. Framed prints behind glass or acrylic are better protected from dust and touch.

Which is easier to hang?

Canvas is lighter than a glazed frame, but both need a nail, hook or wire. Peel-and-stick photo tiles need no tools at all.
