What to hang above a couch - sizes, height and layouts that work
By the Storytiles team in Cape Town · Updated 2 November 2026
Short answer
Make the art about two-thirds the width of your couch, hang it so the bottom edge sits 15-25 cm above the back of the couch, and keep a steady 5-8 cm between frames. For a 3-seater (about 2 m wide) that's an arrangement around 1.3 m wide, for example a 5-across grid of photo tiles. A 2-seater suits about 1 m, and an armchair about 60-75 cm.
The wall above the couch is the biggest blank wall in most South African living rooms, and the one everyone looks at. Get three measurements right and almost anything will look good there.
How big should art above a couch be?
About two-thirds of the couch's width. Smaller and it looks lost, wider and it overwhelms the couch.
| Your couch | Typical width | Aim for art about | Photo tile layouts that fit* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armchair or reading nook | 80-100 cm | 55-70 cm | A trio in a row, or 2×2 large tiles |
| 2-seater | 150-170 cm | 100-115 cm | 3 large tiles in a row, or 4-across grid |
| 3-seater | 200-230 cm | 130-150 cm | 5-across grid (10 or 20 tiles) |
| L-shaped couch | Use the long side | Two-thirds of the long side | 5-across grid, or a scattered wall |
*Approximate widths with roughly 5 cm between tiles: 3 small tiles (21 cm) ≈ 73 cm, 4 ≈ 99 cm, 5 ≈ 125 cm; 2 large tiles (31 cm) ≈ 67 cm, 3 ≈ 103 cm. The Storytiles designer shows your exact layout before you order.

Start stylingHow high should you hang it?
Leave 15-25 cm between the back of the couch and the bottom of the art. That's close enough to look connected to the couch, and high enough that nobody hits it with their head.
On a wall with no furniture under it, designers hang art so its centre is about 145-150 cm from the floor, roughly eye level. Above a couch, the 15-25 cm gap matters more.
How far apart should the frames be?
5-8 cm, the same everywhere. Uneven gaps are the most common reason a gallery wall looks messy. Pre-planned layouts take care of this for you.
Which layouts always look good?
- A tidy grid. Calm and modern, and it suits any couch. Ten or twelve tiles in rows reads as one big piece.
- One statement piece plus breathing room. A single large print, centred. Canvas is good value here: see photo tiles vs canvas.
- A pair or a trio. Simple and symmetrical, and good above a 2-seater or armchair.
- A scattered gallery wall. Mixed sizes with a relaxed, collected look. It's easier when the layout is planned for you.

Yes, and above a couch it's safer: people lean back, and a nail-hung frame can come down. Peel-and-stick photo tiles and adhesive picture strips both hold on smooth painted walls. On face brick or rough texture, lean a large frame on a picture ledge instead. Our guide to hanging pictures without nails covers wall prep.
Quick checklist
- Measure the couch, and aim for art about two-thirds of that width.
- Mark the bottom edge 15-25 cm above the back of the couch.
- Keep 5-8 cm between frames.
- Choose one mood for the photos.
- Stick, step back, adjust.
Frequently asked questions
How big should a picture above a couch be?
About two-thirds of the couch's width. For a 2 m three-seater, aim for art around 1.3 m wide - one large piece or a grid of smaller frames that adds up to that width.
How high should I hang pictures above a couch?
Leave 15-25 cm between the back of the couch and the bottom of the art. Closer than that and heads bump it; much higher and it floats away from the couch.
How far apart should frames be in a gallery wall?
Keep the gaps the same everywhere, usually 5-8 cm. Even spacing is what makes a gallery wall look planned.
What is the 3-5-7 rule?
Odd numbers of items (three, five or seven) tend to look more natural and balanced in a grouping than even numbers. It's a guide, not a law - neat grids of 6, 10 or 12 look great too.
Can I hang pictures above a couch without nails?
Yes. Peel-and-stick photo tiles and adhesive picture-hanging strips both work on smooth painted walls, which is handy in rentals and safer if anyone leans back into the wall.
